About Lesley Charnock
Lesley Charnock was born in 1952 and grew up in Cape Town, South Africa.
In 1972 Lesley studied Fine Art at the Cape Technicon under the tutelage of Herbert Coetzee. For many years she studied oil painting with the late Joe Osser at the Green Point Art Centre in Cape Town.
In 1988 Lesley went to the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town and studied life drawing and oil painting with Ryno Swart.
Lesley is well known as an enthusiastic and inspirational art teacher. For many years she has taught drawing and painting. Many of her students have gone on to enjoy commercial success with their own work.
Lesley is regularly invited by various art societies as a guest artist to demonstrate painting. She has illustrated three popular children’s books.
For eight months of the year, Lesley runs one day workshops in portraiture, still life and landscape painting. She also takes groups of students on five day drawing & painting holidays to picturesque Cape country villages.
Lesley has had solo exhibitions and taken part in many group exhibitions. Her work is sold through several top galleries in and around Cape Town and other centres in the Cape.
In Feb 2005 in Cape Town Lesley had a very successful solo exhibition at the Cape
Gallery. She also had a joint exhibition at the Carmel Art gallery in Constantia village with Derick van Rensberg and Shelaigh Price in April this year in Cape Town.
Numerous visits to the Claremont and Cape Town taxi ranks has been her inspiration for her new works. These paintings capture scenes that are familiar anywhere in South Africa. Lesley is now working on much bigger canvases and her new works are all over 1meter in size.

In September 2006 Lesley completed building her new Studio at Montebello Art and Design Centre in Newlands.
“It has always been my dream to have my own studio and teaching space somewhere in a lovely environment.’ The beautiful space leading out onto an indigenous garden works wonderfully as a small intimate gallery showcasing the many different styles Lesley enjoys working in.
Montebello has it all! Lesley’s Studio and Gallery is surrounded by other artists including potters, papermakers, weavers, jewelers, African musical instrument makers and even a forge!n a safe parking place!.

MEMBERSHIPS
Lesley is a member of the South African society of artists and regular features in there merit exhibition. Lesley runs workshops for this society.
